start the year with turtles
Turtles are funny and mysterious. So I started my year 2012 by donating a few of them to a fundraiser for the Turtle Rescue Team .

Last night My Oz opened at the Albina Press. I didn't really know how all the little pieces would look once they came together as scenes, because I don't have the space to lay them out at home. So this was all new to me too, even after working on this show for about 9 months. Those huge white walls were quite intimidating to me when I first started thinking about the show, knowing that for the most part I like to work at quite a small scale. It turned out to all work nicely in the space at the Albina Press. Opening night was great, lots of people showed up and many red dots were placed! The show runs until January 10th. Here are some pictures.
Artshow time! I have worked super hard over the past 9 months to get this show together and I think it will be special. Opening night is this Friday December 9th from 6pm to 8pm and it will run until January 10th. The place is the Albina Press, 4637 N Albina Ave, Portland, Oregon. Its enormous white walls will be filled with lions, scarecrows, witches, flying monkeys, a poppy field, Kansas, the Emerald City and more!
The Oz of my childhood is quite different from the 1939 movie that most Americans are familiar with. My Oz was in a book called 'Der Zauberer der Smaragdenstadt'— the East German translation of the Russian version of the original L. Frank Baum story. This show represents my own interpretation of that Oz made up of hundreds of small wall-hanging sculptures and cardboard cut-outs.
For the last week the lobby at Laika has been filling up with artsy pumpkins. Portland artists, a lot of them from Laika have created an amazing range of pumpkins to be auctioned off for a fundraiser for the Children's Trust of Oregon. Here is mine. The ravens are called Doom And Gloom. You can see some of the other ones here. My favorite is the exploding whale.
And here is another cake topper picture that one of my etsy customers sent me. This could be straight out of a fancy food magazine!
It's the season to get married. Every once in a while I'll make a wedding cake topper for friends' weddings.
This good looking couple are Doug and Serena with Corban the dog. They were even more handsome in person.
Seth and Missy have been married for a while- I'd have to add two smaller figures now.
That's me and my beloved from my own wedding cake. Yes, our wedding was a little different.
As promised weeks ago, here is a photo of the Ancient Deity of Ice Cream and Real Estate in its spot at the Church Of Ice Cream inside the Peculiarium. That's Mike Wellins himself having a hot dog.
Instead of taking down the shelves, we decided to have another show this month at the Peculiarium. This one is called Warts And All and features squids, worry warts and more birds. Why not do a good thing twice?
Phina approves.
Here is the piece about me on Oregon Art Beat.
Tonight there is going to be an episode about little old me on OPB Art Beat. You can watch it tonight, Thursday May 12th at 8:00pm or on Sunday May 15th at 6:00pm if you live in Oregon. If you don't, you can also see it online here after it has screened. I have not seen it myself and I am so curious. Support public television!
Oh, and special bonus: it will feature the music of funky band and good friends The Golden Greats!
Lots of people showed up to see Chess and Ornithology at the Peculiarium. It was a great evening and art sold like crazy! Thank you all who came! Here is Jule taking a picture of the Tower figure.
Finally I made something big! So satisfying. Also at the amazing place called the Frakybuttrue Peculiarium you can find the Church of Ice Cream where they serve treats like Sundae Bloody Sundae (with real worms on top if you insist). And above this craziness floats my Ancient Deity of Ice Cream and Real Estate. Here is a photo of him when he was still at my house, but I'll post one from the actual church soon!
The Freakybuttrue Peculiarium is a new gallery/oddity museum/ joke shop/ice cream store unlike anything you've ever seen. As if that wasn't reason enough to visit them, there's also going to be a show of my sculptures:

Robot Love is a show at The Good Gallery here in Portland. It's an amusing group show in its third year and I am going to have a piece in it this year. Opening February 4th! Good times.
What a wonderful little festival! Sweet people and a perfect greek island. I had a blast!
